Soldier 30:30 attracts participants from all walks of life, young & older, male & female, locals who live on the moors, newcomers who have not visited them before, soldiers and civilians, British nationals and foreigners, wounded & non-wounded.

The difference in backgrounds renders it impossible to award one outright prize to a winning team.

Hence, a statuette is awarded to the quickest teams in the following classes:

Within each class prizes are awarded according to course (30 Miles or 30 Kilometres), age (junior, peak or senior) and gender (male, female or mixed).

On behalf of Skid’s Kids, please could you pass on our thanks to your incredible support team, last night’s dinner highlighted what a great group of people you have giving of their time and enthusiasm to make it such a memorable event. I confess I made a schoolboy error by not following Harry and Rob’s example and taking up the offer of a sports massage, but there again it afforded more time to appreciate the efforts of your wonderful cake makers – I fear any lost calories may well have been quickly replenished.

It is easy to take it for granted just how much hard work and effort goes into making an event run smoothly, and its clear you personally must take the credit having brought together such a nice gang of folk; we were certainly hugely impressed and appreciative of the encouragement and support we received at each of the checkpoints – even if no one offered to give us a lift!

I have many memories from the event but the one that makes me smile the most is when we had struggled up that awful little hill to CP2 and I had identified our team to the “two Lee’s”, to which a Geordie voice asked, “Ah, Team 1, how’s the elderly gent doing?”, to which I replied “ Why don’t you ask him, he’s the big ex Royal Marine stood right behind me!” This little exchange kept me and Bob going the whole way round!

We’re quite happy with our yomp. Lots of time to be made up after faffing about on the way to Clovenrocks Bridge looking for a track then settling for the long road round. Also, now we know water is available at some checkpoints, we won’t yomp with 25kg per team member. We should have been given an extreme load/idiocy award as well as our nice statuette. Next year we reckon we’re sub 10 hours.

What an amazing day and spirit. We were so impressed with the organisation and the cheerful nature of the helpers. The post-challenge meal was similarly an excellent way to round the day off as nine of us crammed into a people carrier, myself in the boot. All round great day and we met some great people. Thank you.

I would just like to say a personal thank you for the hosting of the event. I thought it was all brilliant and have had many people interested at school, and thus I hope to see you again next year.

The day was brilliant. Despite some people not knowing each other the rapport was great through the common goal of wanting to achieve. We had great team spirit and had made a pact before that what “happens on the moor stays on the moor” because we knew tempers would get frayed with such a grueling challenge. This worked out well for me as I got them all lost in the mist on Leg 2 to the point where we almost had to be re-routed. We made time though and all completed.

Can I just say how much I enjoyed the entire experience. I don’t think that I stopped smiling throughout. It was incredibly well run and I was particularly impressed with the emphasis placed on the safety of all competitors.

Overall the event is magnificent. Bar the 33 or so miles we yomped, we loved every minute of it. Check-in time is quite late for an event starting so early, but no doubt due to everyone having to do a day’s work beforehand. Race admin very straightforward, no issues there. Post-race tent very good, nice and relaxed and quietly efficient. Many thanks to your good wife for the cakes (and for sitting at our scary Scouse table) and please next year make the carrot cake you promised, not more chocolate related items…after all the nutty and sports drinks we imbibed on Saturday I’m surprised we’re not now Type 2 diabetic. The evening scran also excellent.

The administration was hugely efficient, and the various teams at the checkpoints were, to a man and woman, encouraging, positive and rattlingly good company for the time of our dawdlings various. We all know that DS on a windy day on a hilltop can be less than thrilling, but they were all hugely helpful and generally decent bods. Not that you needed telling that, but hopefully it’s good to hear it confirmed.

I would like to start by saying a huge thanks to you and all your team for a very well run event. I am, of course, disappointed with having to pull out through injury at Checkpoint 4 but am feeling a lot better already. Can I say two special thank yous: firstly to you for helping us get a table at the meal. You must have had a very long and stressful day and still gave your time to ensure we were sorted out. Secondly to Jamie and his son Fergus (I hope I have their names correct) at Checkpoint 4. They were both amazing and in a large way helped me get over the disappointment of not completing the course at this attempt.

The masseuses all said what a great weekend they had and how much they enjoyed themselves and hoped to be able to come next year, so the goodness of the 30:30 is bringing in more people to the fold each year!

A great competition event and fantastically well organised. A big thank you to you and all your hard working back-up/support team. I know that everyone of our team thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and it was satisfying that we gave the South Molton RBL Team a run for their money and made them work even harder for their win this time round!

The safety organisation on the event was fantastic, both at the checkpoints and race control. Your summary of the weather on the website was spot on, and there was more than enough information provided to enable teams to prepare.

I was sorry not to have stayed down for the meal after the great event you organised. I felt I should get back to help look after the kids. Many thanks to you and your team for the day, and special thanks to your wife for the great baking!

We look forward to the pictures from the checkpoints; the whole day was a fantastic experience; we are all really glad that we had an opportunity to complete one of the most difficult tasks we have ever attempted. Thank you putting up with our ‘other-halves’ during the day (you are a saint); they said that everyone at race control was very accommodating, and they were very impressed with the organisation and GPS systems – I think you managed to calm a lot of their fears for us.

The cadets did the Nijmegen March this year (16+ years old). The 30km Exmoor 30:30 course would be a good start for them. The cadets are under funded and raise monies for themselves, so I guess they would struggle to raise lots for RBL when they could do something for themselves. That said, this year’s cadets are next year’s big boys and girls, and they may want to do it properly.

Taking part in the Exmoor 30:30 was a fantastic experience from start to finish. On arrival the teams were greeted with a hearty home cooked meal, which even catered for vegetarians. On return we were greeted with medals, massages and a dinner! It was evident that the event was incredibly well organised. There was a clear briefing at the start, knowledgeable personnel at each checkpoint (including a professional rescue team at the river crossing) and each team was fitted with a tracking device, demonstrating that safety was paramount whilst the teams ventured across the grueling Exmoor terrain. Offering both a 30 mile or 30 km route allowed a mixed bag of teams the opportunity to take part – from military to junior teams. The feedback I have received from my team reflects my opinion and we are all keen to get the word out about next year’s event…bring on Exmoor 30:30 (2012)!

I really enjoyed every minute of it (except the lashing horizontal rain). My wife has decided that she and some of her friends will enter for the 30km next year and I’m sure I can get a few more teams involved. I personally would like to do it again and break the 8.5 hour mark.

This is more of a plea for inertia: I do believe that shortening the course or lightening the weight would, in the long term, kill a really good event.

Weigh the bergens and add time penalties of 5 minutes for every pound underweight? Why not try and add a mental element as well? At the river crossing provide a taught 2 inch rope and people have to get across without getting wet? Years ago I did an event where people were given a heavy duty fold up cardboard canoe which they had to assemble!
